Components of European Kitchen Fundamentals
Presented by Rosemary Porto, Senior Designer, Poggenpohl

This course focuses on the history of European kitchen design, European design details such as minimalism, sustainable practices, and how Universal Design is compatible with European Kitchen Design. 

The course includes the following four learning objectives: 

  • The historical significance of European kitchen design with a comparison of U.S. versus European manufacturing methods and materials.
  • Focus on key components of minimalist kitchen design and identify the trends that are shaping the future of the industry.  
  • Learn about maximizing kitchen storage options and organization of kitchen tools and food supplies. 
  • Recognize the emerging sustainability standards relating to cabinet materials, such as new trends in lacquers, protected woods, and other alternatives. Identify the improvements of ergonomics in European kitchen design.  Realize how European cabinetry lends itself easily to Universal Design.

Lunch & learn programs include a CEU presentation, networking time, and a light lunch. This program is worth 1 LU credit for either ASID or AIA.

About Rosemary

Since 1985, Rosemary Porto, Senior Designer for Poggenpohl, has created bespoke interiors in the Boston area. Porto's passion to produce her clients' visions is what motivates her to design. "The essence of my work lies in translating my clients' vision into a design that aligns with their desires and with the harmony of their homes," states Porto.

Rosemary Porto has been frequently recognized for her contributions to the New England Design Community. In 2014, Porto was inducted to the New England Design Hall of Fame and in 2017 awarded by The American Society of Interior Designers New England as an Industry Partner. 

Her heart lies in designing sophisticated kitchens and bathrooms. Although her spaces are on the more modern end of the spectrum, Porto prides herself in incorporating antiques and timeless pieces in her contemporary designs. She regards herself as a "specialist in all things metric."
